Admission to the Nursing Program

Traditional​

  • Students must apply

Direct Admit | Early Assurance ​​ 

Acceptance to the Nursing Program is competitive with priority given to students admitted to The University of Findlay with the admission status of Early Assurance into the Nursing Program. In addition, The University of Findlay students are given priority over transfer students. Students who meet the following criteria will be considered for acceptance into the Nursing Program in the spring semester of the second year of the nursing curriculum:

Students interested in applying for Early Assurance into the Nursing Program will need to complete the early assurance application. High school seniors may receive the admission status of Early Assurance if the following criteria are met:

  1. Obtain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 in high school;
  2. Complete a minimum of 3 years of high school math, including algebra;
  3. Complete a minimum of 3 years of high school science, including biology and chemistry.

Students who have been granted Early Assurance into the Nursing Program are expected to successfully complete the prerequisite coursework for acceptance into the Nursing Program. A student admitted under this admission status who does not successfully complete the Nursing Program prerequisite requirements within the first three semesters (for a traditional 4-year program) or within one semester (for a 3-year program with College Credit Plus [CCP] credit), will forfeit their Early Assurance seat.


Upon admission to the University, students may declare the major of nursing and schedule courses to complete the nursing prerequisites. After admission to and enrollment in the University, students will need to be formally accepted into the Nursing Program. All students (including transfer students) will be considered for acceptance into the Nursing Program by the Department of Nursing on a competitive basis. Students applying to the Nursing Program may not transfer courses from other institutions to meet the requirements of nursing courses.



Transfer students may be required to submit course syllabi or descriptions for evaluation before previously earned credits are considered for transfer. Courses will be evaluated by the University’s Office of the Registrar. A minimum grade of “C” (a “C-” is not acceptable) must be earned in order to receive credit for transfer courses.

Entrance into The University of Findlay requires the following:

  • Complete all pre-requisite courses
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year)

Upon admission to the University, transfer students may declare the major of nursing and schedule courses to complete the nursing prerequisites. After admission to the University, students will need to be formally admitted to the Department of Nursing to take the first clinical nursing course which is scheduled for the spring semester of the second year of the nursing curriculum. All students (including transfer students) will be considered for admission into the Department of Nursing on a competitive basis.
 
 

International Students

Entrance into The University of Findlay requires the following:

  • International students must apply
  • All International students entering Findlay’s undergraduate program must submit a TOEFL score of at least 500. International students whose medium of instruction was in English at the secondary and/or post-secondary levels may apply for exemption from this requirement
  • Gain acceptance to The University of Findlay
  • Complete all pre-requisite courses
  • Gain acceptance to the nursing program (sophomore year)
 

Gain Acceptance to the Nursing Program


Acceptance to the Nursing Program is competitive with priority given to students admitted to The University of Findlay with the admission status of Early Assurance into the Nursing Program. In addition, The University of Findlay students are given priority over transfer students. Students who meet the following criteria will be considered for acceptance into the Nursing Program in the spring semester of the second year of the nursing curriculum:​

  1. Obtain a grade of “C" or higher in CHEM 111 and CHEM 111LBIOL 222BIOL 222LBIOL 223, and BIOL 223L or BIOL 322BIOL 322LBIOL 323, and BIOL 323L, and ANHS 150 (“C-" is not acceptable). These courses must be taken within the previous five academic years to be considered for admission into the Nursing Program.
  2. Obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (admission is competitive).
  3. Completion of Application for Acceptance into the Nursing Program.
  4. Evidence of current BLS/CPR certification for healthcare providers from an American Heart Association certification program (Red Cross certification is not acceptable).
  5. Results of a criminal background check that meets the Ohio Board of Nursing requirements.
  6. A current physical exam provided through the Cosiano Health Center, an urgent care center, or through a primary care provider. The required form to be used by all providers is included at the end of the Student Nurse Handbook. If a student does not complete their physical exam through the Cosiano Health Center, the student will need to provide current immunization/vaccine records to the Cosiano Health Center for review and verification prior to submitting records to the Department of Nursing. Health records will be shared between Cosiano Health Center and the Department of Nursing at the direction of the nursing student, as necessary for nursing student files to be eligible to complete their clinical experience.
  7. Documentation of current immunizations including Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap), Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Varicella (chickenpox- 2 vaccines), and/or titer required, Hepatitis B series (titer required), Mantoux (TB, PPD) Test, including an initial 2-step test and then a 1-step test annually, Polio and additional vaccines required by clinical agencies. This may include an annual influenza vaccine and/or the initial COVID-19 vaccine(s). Vaccines and immunization titers will need to be current and documented through the Cosiano Health Center before a physical exam can be scheduled/completed at the Cosiano Health Center.
  8. Urine Drug Screen (definitive negative results).
  9. If a student has been adjudicated by a probate court of being mentally ill or mentally incompetent, they must have been restored to competency prior to admission.
  10. Students enrolled in Nursing courses with clinical components must be 18 years of age or older.
